  • ZAMAKONA YARDS REPAIRS THE OSV FLEET OF TIDEWATER

DELATTE TIDE with IMO number 9421386 is the fourth vessel of TideWater in our slipways in Canary Islands. Tidewater created the “work boat” industry with its 1956 launch of the Ebb Tide, the world’s first offshore vessel tailor-made to support the offshore oil and gas industry.

Tidewater’s story begins in 1955, when a group of investors led by the Laborde family of New Orleans pioneered the development of the first offshore service vessel tailor-made to support the new and growing offshore oil and gas industry. A year later, as the vessel Ebb Tide prepared to sail for working in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, Tidewater Marine Service, Inc. commenced operations. Its first leader was John P. Laborde.

Now, more than 55 years and many vessels later, Tidewater remains the leader of the industry it created, following the search for oil and gas into increasingly deeper waters globally and extending its proven record of service to installations closer to land. In the process, the company has earned a reputation for anticipating and responding to the changing worldwide needs of energy exploration and production.

  • THE OFFSHORE MARKET: GOOD EXPECTATIONS FOR 2012

The growth in worldwide drilling activity is producing an increase of shipbuilding and ship repair for this year. The forecasting for the offshore industry for the next years is positive too.

The uprising drilling activity along the world is explained for various factor keys:

    – the new giant discovery in the North Sea (Aldous and Avaldsnes reserve zones).

    – activity in the Gulf of Mexico has also begun to rebound after the Macondo accident.

    – the new exploration campaings in deep oil fields mainly in West Africa and Brazil.

The conjunction of these factors has produced growth across all the major drivers of OSV demand. The high average age of some world fleet segments is pulling of the demand too. The shipowners are renewing their fleet and increasing their maintenance budgets.

According to the United Nations in its paper “Review of maritime transport – 2011”, since 2010 to 2011, the OSV world fleet grew an 34% in DWT (from 24.673 to 33.227). For the next years the global demand for OSVs in 2012 is expected to grow.

    Market prospects

The current AHTS order book is indicating that 191 units will be delivered in 2012 and 34 units will be delivered in 2013. Experts expect the AHTS fleet will probably grow by close to 6 percent in 2012. The large AHTS fleet (16,000+bhp) is likely to grow more rapidly – closer to 10 percent in 2012 – as there are still a number of large AHTS vessels in the order book for the year ahead.

The current PSV order book is indicating 146 units will be delivered in 2012 and 100 units in 2013. The PSV fleet is therefore expected to grow by 9 percent in 2012.

  • ZAMAKONA YARDS DELIVERED THE ESVAGT AURORA

Last August 01 Zamakona Shipyards the vessel “ESVAGT AURORA” to Esvagt AS, Company belonging to the Danish multinational A.P. Møller-Mærsk.

This is the third vessel the Zamakona Yards has built for this Client. The main mission of the vessel is to remain on stand by, and give immediate assistance to offshore platforms in emergency situations. The vessel is specially adapted to the harsh climate conditions in the BARENTS SEA, where she will start operating for ENI NORGE AS on a 10 year charter contract.

The vessel integrates the lastest technological developments for launching and recovery of rescue boats, de-icing equipment to avoid ice accretion on the decks as well as pollution control gear, fulfilling the highest standards required by the Norwegian Authorities for this kind of vessels.

“The delivery of this vessel represents the consolidation of Shipyard ZAMAKONA among the world leaders in building Stand By vessels. We would like to express our thanks to ESVAGT for trusting in ZAMAKONA, and we are sure that ESVAGT AURORA will fulfill and exceed the expectations put in her” states the President of ZAMAKONA GROUP Pedro GARAYGORDOBIL.

The vessel is 87 m long, 17 m wide and has 9.240 kW of diesel-electric power. It is easily recognizable to it’s X-bow. The vessel can perform high sea towage tasks, and she is fitted with a duplex dynamic positioning system, which allows her to keep the position even in very adverse climate conditions with hurricane force winds and rough sea. This feature gives her the capacity to operate ROVs in difficult conditions  in deep seas.

The vessel and its equipment are in full compliance with the environmental class designation “CLEAN DESIGN”, since the vessel is respectful with the environment, in particular regarding the gas emissions and liquids. It has also achieved a high DnV Comf-V notation due to low noise and vibration levels, and “allowing the crew good comfort and resting on board”.

  • LAS PALMAS PORT: READY FOR THE FUTURE

    History of Las Palmas Port

Since ancient times the Bay of La Isleta, on the north-east coast of Gran Canaria, had been used by Phoenician and Roman ships as a safe anchorage; but it was not until 1478, the foundation year of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, that regular port activities were to be seen in this harbour.

As soon as Spain extended its rule over the Canary Islands, Las Palmas became the main support base for maritime expeditions across the oceans. The famous navigator, Christopher Columbus, used the islands as a base for shiprepairs and as his last stop in Europe before sailing to the New World.  (más…)
