  • Crankshaft change on MV Kampen

Napesca, company belonging to Zamakona Yards is working on the vessel Kampen with IMO 9214587, changing the main engine crankshaft. The vessel belongs to Eckhoff GMB & CO and is currently docked at the Reina Sofía pier in the Port of Las Palmas. The project is being carried out in cooperation with Wartsila, one of the world leaders in marine engines.

The engine model is the Wartsila 8L46B with 8 cylinders in line, running vertically and producing 10,605 horse powers at 500 revolutions per minute. The crankshaft weighs 15,000 kg and measures 8 meters.

  • Sølvtrans expands the fleet and prepares for further growth with Zamakona Yards

Sølvtrans has signed a new contract with the Spanish shipyard Zamakona Yards for the construction of a new 3,200 m3 well-boat. Delivery is scheduled to early 2014. The vessel is a sister ship of Rojna Polaris, currently under construction at Zamakona Yards. Further, Solvtrans has entered an option for two additional vessels with delivery in second half of 2014 and first half of 2015.

The investment, amounting to some NOK 250 million (€ 22 million) per vessel, will be funded through a combination of internal means and bank loans.

The new vessels will be constructed according to the same specifications as Ronja Polaris and thus have state of the art technology and environmentally friendly solutions. We recall that a “wellboat” is a vessel with tanks intended for transporting live fish.

Roger Halsebakk CEO of Solvtrans says “We experience an increasing imbalance in the well-boat market. A combination of new licences, continued consolidation and stricter regulations in the farming industry has increased demand for modern tonnage. The new build is a direct response to this development, and the options are core to the company’s strategy to renew and expand the fleet, preparing the company for further growth. The choice of Zamakona Yards as supplier is based on Sølvtrans’ good experiences from the ongoing construction of Ronja Polaris”.

The option for two additional vessels can be exercised until 30 June 2013. The contract is subject to financing.

  • The protection solution for pirate attacks in Zamakona Yards

According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), the piracy is rising in West Africa. In the Gulf of Guinea, there have been 58 incidents in 2012, including 10 hijackings and 207 crew members taken hostage. The pirates in this area are particularly violent, with guns reported in at least 37 of the attacks. Benin is an exception, showing a sharp fall from 20 incidents (including eight hijackings) in 2011 to two (including one hijacking) in 2012.

Since early February have been producing pirate attacks on various vessels in this area, and the international news all point to that violence and hijackings will unfortunately continue off the coast of Africa.

This leads to an unsafe environment for everyone working on ships in this area as well possible as loss of material and time. Zamakona Yards together with CollBaix (Marine Armor System) are ready to protect our clientes. We prepare and install protective systems on vessels. We can not stop this threat, but we can help protect people!.
