GITTE HENNING fishing company is leading the way by bringing fishing in blue Denmark into a new, green age by contracting a new, environmentally friendly pelagic fishing vessel from the Spanish shipyard Zamakona in Bilbao.
Henning Kjeldsen says he initially intended to withdraw from fishing after the sale of Gitte Henning to the Faroe Islands, as well as receiving offers for all his pelagic fishing rights. After thinking about the future, I got cold feet doing nothing, and contacted Salt Ship Design, says Henning.
Together, Henning and Salt have now designed a new, green Gitte Henning. The new fishing vessel will have a number of environmentally friendly solutions, many of them new in pelagic fishing. Throughout the design process and in the choice of equipment, the focus has been on improving quality of the fish and reducing emissions through reduced energy consumption and efficient power production.
By ordering a new Gitte Henning it is the fourth time Henning Kjeldsen and the Sandvik family are designing a vessel together, and the second time Henning is ordering a Salt-design.
REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Propulsion and manoeuvring
The one large propeller that is common on pelagic trawlers has been replaced by two propellers and a twin-skeg hull design. Extensive flow analysis and model tests result is a more efficient stern and propeller design, which provides larger trawling pull and less fuel consumption during trawling. Large rudder angles are often needed on conventional fishing vessels to maintain course, even in moderate weather conditions. Two propellers provide the opportunity to steer the ship with minimal rudder impact, which reduces additional energy requirements during sailing and trawling.
Permanent Magnet Motor (PM)
The two propellers are powered by two electric Permanent Magnet (PM) motors. This type of motor has less electrical loss and can operate significantly more efficient than conventional electric motors throughout the power range – particularly at low engine speeds. Low propeller rpm has the following advantages:
- Better propeller efficiency at typical loading
- No need for reduction gear and thus no mechanical loss
- Reduced noise
Electrical winches
All winches are also powered by PM motors for reduced loss and optimal operation. Electrical winches provide the opportunity to regenerate, the other vice lost, energy when the trawl is set. This energy is available to other consumers and can, for example, be used for propulsion or RSW (refrigerated sea water) cooling. Conventional hydraulic winches and fishing pumps require a system with a significant amount of hydraulic oil. The risk of hydraulic oil spill to sea is eliminated by choosing electric winches.
RSW cooling and fish quality
The RSW area at the new Gitte Henning is arranged in a new way that gives inner surfaces of the RSW tanks a smooth finish with no obstructions or sharp edges. The vessel is equipped with four independent cooling systems, with four RSW tanks per facility. This provides a more efficient cooling process by only cooling parts of the fish tank volume at the time, resulting in an optimal, energy saving cooling system. In addition, the capacity of the vacuum system for unloading has been increased by 40% compared to normal unloading capacity.
Overall, this will provide a more careful handling of the fish that will improve quality.
Electrical operation
All electric motors, from winches to pumps, are frequency controlled. This will provide a more customised power supply and hence reduce the overall energy consumption.
EFFICIENT POWER PRODUCTION
Diesel Electric
Five diesel generators, located in two separate engine rooms for the best possible safety and working environment, supply the propulsion PM motors and all other energy consumers on board. All generators are equipped with catalytic converter (SCR) to reduce emissions and meet new and stricter IMO Tier III requirements.
The energy requirements of a pelagic trawler fluctuate significantly with varying weather, operational conditions, cooling requirements, speed, etc. The number and size of generators are chosen to optimize the power balance based on the vessel specific operational profile and give the diesel engine optimum operating conditions and thus high efficiency.
Hybrid
To further improve the operating conditions of the diesel engines, Henning has invested in a large battery pack that support the generators when the load is high and recharges when the load is low. Regenerated power from the winches during trawling also helps to charge the battery pack.
In this way, the diesel engine will not experience the large load variations which in itself gives a fuel reduction of the range of ~ 10% based on the experience of other diesel electric vessels. So called ‘Peak Shaving’, i.e. the battery is ‘shaving’ the load peaks.
The batteries are located in a separate room, thus providing an additional source of emergency power in addition to the diesel generators in the two engine rooms. In addition, they will significantly reduce noise and emissions in port.

On March 31th ended another edition of SINAVAL, a meeting that is considered one of the main references of the naval sector in Spain and Europe. This year, for the first time, it was part of the Maritime World Week program, along with the Marine Energy Week, Eurofishing and FuturePort fairs, which were held at the Bilbao Exhibition Center of the Basque Country.
According to the organization, a total of 1,747 professionals attended to this event to learn about the latest technological advances and to look for new business opportunities in the “blue economy” or the industries of the sea. This industry currently moves 275 billion euros in the European Union. In addition, 100 speakers from 16 different countries took part in the round tables and seminars, being able to show their specialized vision on various aspects of maritime news.
Among all these presentations, it is worth mentioning the one carried out by the Basque Maritime Forum, an organization that brings together associations, public institutions and companies from the Basque maritime sector. This presentation analysed the situation of the naval industry and its prospects in Spain and in the Basque Country. It was stated that for this year 2017 there is “a slight tendency of improvement”, having as the main challenge of “recovering levels of activity that consolidate the Industry and enable to regain their position and prestige in the international market “.
Furthermore, this organization announced that in the first months of 2017, the Basque shipyards, which currently have a portfolio of 33% of the total national orders, have matched the contract figures formalized last year. Thus, the orders to the shipyards of the Basque Autonomous Community are 20 out of a total of 55 orders in the private sector in Spain, and where Zamakona Yards owns 10 projects out of the total accounted.
In order to continue this trend and be sustainable over time, the Basque Maritime Forum has launched its new Strategic Plan 2017-2020 to “deal with competitiveness” in the new economic scenario, with the aim of strengthening internationalization, to foster the cooperation between enterprises, training and innovation.

On January 24, Zamakona Yards Group delivered the VB Xerea, the second tug for Boluda Towage and Salvage, after the first delivery and sea test of the VB Xaloc tug carried out at the end of September 2016.
On this occasion, public representatives attended this event such as the Director General of the Spanish Merchant Marine, Rafael Rodríguez and José Luis García Lena, Deputy Director of the Spanish Merchant Marine. Boluda Towage and Salvage representatives also attended the event and were represented by the President Joaquín Lozano, Antonio Bordils, the CEO and José Luis Gonzalez, the General Manager for Spain; The Maritime Captain of Passages, Josu Bilbao, and ANARE, Ángel Mato, General Director also attended the tests. The delegation was received at the Zamakona Shipyards, in the port of Pasajes by its president, Pedro Garaigordobil.
The “VB Xerea” was exposed to different tests, as the first tug delivered, of power, speed, manoeuvrability, performance and electronic systems, with a magnificent behaviour in all of them.
This two vessels as the rest of this series of the ten tugboats that Boluda Towage and Salvage has commissioned Zamakona Shipyards, have been designed by the Canadian prestigious naval architecture study of Robert Allan with the aim of rendering towing service in port, sea and escort. In addition, this new generation of tugboats presents interesting innovations as the increase of its shot to fixed point up to 80 tons, mainly because the propellers are guaranteed the supply of the maximum power and without mechanical losses intermediate. The boats will be 31.57 meters long and 12.8 meters beam, with a draft of 6.5 meters and are estimated to reach a speed of 13.5 knots. Also, they incorporate the Caterpillar Mak diesel engines, with a power of 7,500 BHP, Voith propulsion and deck machinery of Ibercisa.
Zamakona shipyards will continue to progress in the construction of the remaining eight tugs, in the same terms of quality and will be delivered progressively in a period of four years.

ZAMAKONA SHIPYARD is the beneficiary of the confidence of the Prestigious Tuna Fishery, Nicra-7, and is delivering their new Tuna Freezer vessel, “Guria” at the Bizkaia Este dock of the Port of Bilbao. This Saturday, Astilleros ZamakonaS.A.
Will hold the inauguration ceremony of the first of this innovative type of vessel for the Bermean Compoany. This act will be attended by representatives from both companies, the Port of Bilbao and authorities of the Basque Government. This vessel, the “Guria” is construction Nº 751 of the Santurce Shipyard and is a project of new design with the latest and most modern technology built to the specifications of this Bermean Shipowner. It has a length of 81 meters and a top speed of 16 knots thanks to its power plant of 5440CV. The crew is composed of 27 mariners to handle a capture capacity of 1708 m3 of tuna. The vessel will fish in the Atlantic Ocean. The company, Nicra-7, expressed their satisfaction on the construction of a new vessel for the first time at this shipyard and has said that it will not be the last, thanks to the degree of cooperation and the quality of construction received.

Since finishing the adaptation work on our slipway Nº 4 of our REPNAVAL Shipyard at the Port of Las Palmas which can service vessels up to 126 M length and 5500 Tons we haven’t stopped working on vessels which we could not accommodate previously with our limited capacity. Thus, recently, we have drydocked the Vessel “Angel” (before, “Caliope”) of 113 M and 3500 Tons and we are now drydocking the pontoon Koca Yusuf of 92 M length and 27.5 M width. All of which means that the effort and investment we have made w justifiable as shown by the enthusiastic reception and demand of our customers for the drydocking of their vessels.

Recently, we’ve successfully carried out repairs and maintenance simultaneously on the two emblematic government owned hospital ships, Juan De La Cosa and Esperanza Del Mar.
It occurred that the two vessels were repaired simultaneously. The vessel Juan De La Cosa was repaired at Zamakona Pasaia yard at San Sebastian and the Esperanza Del Ma” at our yard, Repnaval, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Both projects were offered at public bidding and our proposals were the winners. We take great pride in being able to offer our services to these two emblematic vessels which are carrying out such important work in attending to the needs of our fishing men in the areas where they are working.

Haifa Port Company (HPC) has awarded the international tender for a new build VOITH SCHNEIDER tug to ZAMAKONA Yards.
HPC has tendered a tug which is a sister vessel of the ones already operating in the harbor. The tug has 70 t bollard pull and 31,50 m length by 12,50 beam. The design has been done by VOITH DESIGN, optimizing the hull shape and including some improvements required by the Client. Classification will be LOYD’S REGISTER, and the notation includes also FIFI 1 with water spay.
The tug is equipped with 2 VOITH 32R5 propulsion units coupled to 2 MAN main engines 8L27/38 developing each 2.670 kW.
For towage purposes the aft deck is fitted with a towing hook and a towage winch from HATLAPA.

The ship (FSV) Ocean Osprey arrived to Scotland last week to soon begin operating in the Gannet offshore oilfields. This vessel will support the works for the Norwegian company Shell UK / Dana Petroleum.
This ship was launched successfully on the 31st of January at our facility in Pasajes (San Sebastián). The Ocean Osprey is the first ordered ship by the Norwegian shipping company Atlantic Offshore AS built by Zamakona Yards. It is expected that by the end of June 2014 their second vessel (Ocean Marlin) will be ready. It is a Havyard HY820 design.

In 1975, during International Women’s Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. In adopting its resolution, the General Assembly recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for women’s full and equal participation.
International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.

En la mañana de hoy viernes 29 de noviembre a las 8:30, el Excmo. Sr. Alcalde de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, D. Juan José Cardona realizó una visita a las instalaciones de Zamakona Yards en el Puerto de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Estuvo acompañado por la Concejala de distrito Puerto Dña. Carolina León y el Jefe Área Infraestructuras e Ingeniería de la Autoridad Portuaria, D. Salvador Capella.
Durante la visita se mantuvo una reunión de trabajo con el CEO del Grupo Zamakona Yards en Canarias D. Alvaro Garaygordóbil, con el Director General D. Borja Garaygordóbil y el Director de Marketing D. Leandro Aguirreche.
Durante la reunión el Sr. Alcalde tuvo la oportunidad de conocer de primera mano la actividad de reparaciones navales que desarrolla nuestro grupo en Gran Canaria desde 1972, mostrándose muy interesado en los proyectos actuales que Zamakona Yards está realizando.
Ahora mismo, Zamakona Yards está trabajando en la ampliación del carro Nº 4 y la futura construcción de un Taller especializado en la reparación de hélices azimutales en la parcela recientemente concedida por el consejo de la Autoridad Portuaria en el muelle Reina Sofía.
El Sr. Cardona destacó la importancia de nuestro sector en la economía canaria y expresó la absoluta disposición del Ayuntamiento que preside a colaborar en la promoción de nuestro puerto como una de las ejes claves del plan de internacionalización de la ciudad que está liderando.
Desde aquí queremos agradecer su visita y congratularnos por la gran sintonía demostrada con los retos de futuro del sector de las reparaciones navales, del Puerto de Las Palmas, y por ende de nuestra ciudad.
