According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), the piracy is rising in West Africa. In the Gulf of Guinea, there have been 58 incidents in 2012, including 10 hijackings and 207 crew members taken hostage. The pirates in this area are particularly violent, with guns reported in at least 37 of the attacks. Benin is an exception, showing a sharp fall from 20 incidents (including eight hijackings) in 2011 to two (including one hijacking) in 2012.
Since early February have been producing pirate attacks on various vessels in this area, and the international news all point to that violence and hijackings will unfortunately continue off the coast of Africa.
This leads to an unsafe environment for everyone working on ships in this area as well possible as loss of material and time. Zamakona Yards together with CollBaix (Marine Armor System) are ready to protect our clientes. We prepare and install protective systems on vessels. We can not stop this threat, but we can help protect people!.
This factory is in a strategic location, being the Puerto de la Luz one of the most important ports for ship repairing in the Atlantic. Don’t hesitate to contact us for further information¡.

With the desire to improve the training of our employees and therefore the service we provide to our customers, Nicol & Andrew moved to the Canary Islands to train our staff.
Originally founded in 1952, Nicol & Andrew was the first company of its kind to carry out in-situ machining and repairs on marine propulsion units such as diesel engines. The in-situ marine repairs allows a very rapid response and total dedication to getting the equipment back in running order in the minimum possible time.
For ten days a training has been conducted in our facilities enabling us to grind and polish crankpin in situ without dismantling and removing the engine crankshaft.
This saves time and cost and can repair 90% of damaged cranks. Currently our equipment allows for crankpin machining between 170-325 mm in diameter and 140-400 mm wide materials although for other measures, Nicol & Andrew would supply the necessary material.
If you need more information about this and others services, please contact us.

DELATTE TIDE with IMO number 9421386 is the fourth vessel of TideWater in our slipways in Canary Islands. Tidewater created the “work boat” industry with its 1956 launch of the Ebb Tide, the world’s first offshore vessel tailor-made to support the offshore oil and gas industry.
Tidewater’s story begins in 1955, when a group of investors led by the Laborde family of New Orleans pioneered the development of the first offshore service vessel tailor-made to support the new and growing offshore oil and gas industry. A year later, as the vessel Ebb Tide prepared to sail for working in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, Tidewater Marine Service, Inc. commenced operations. Its first leader was John P. Laborde.
Now, more than 55 years and many vessels later, Tidewater remains the leader of the industry it created, following the search for oil and gas into increasingly deeper waters globally and extending its proven record of service to installations closer to land. In the process, the company has earned a reputation for anticipating and responding to the changing worldwide needs of energy exploration and production.

ZAMAKONA YARDS CANARY ISLANDS PURCHASE THE GOVERNOR TEST STAND SERIES AK8

We bought recently a governor test stand of the AK8 serie. This machine is from the brand Regulateurs Europa, and it´s the only that you can find in the middle atlantic ocean.
The AK8 is an electrically driven governor test stand for permanent installation. The purpose of the rig is to assist in adjunsting, servicing and testing the performance of hydraulic speed governors and hydraulic actuators. The test stand has been designed to simulate diesel engine operating conditions; the governor and test stand form a closed loop system.
For the sitting-up and testing of hydraulic actuators the test stand can also operate in open loop mode. In that instance the drive speed is set at, and controlled from, the stand itself.
The basis of the test stand is a sophisticated PLC. The PLC controls a Frequency Converter which in turn drives a 5.5 kW electric motor. The governor or actuator is direct driven by the electric motor.
When in closed loop mode, the test stand simulates a diesel engine. This involves that the “load” of the engine is simulated on by test stand. If the set speed of the governor is altered the governor output will change momentary to increase or decrease the amount of “fuel ” applied. This will cause the drive speed to change accordingly.
Also if the simulated load on the test stand is changed the output position of the governor will change to maintain the set speed.

History of Las Palmas Port
Since ancient times the Bay of La Isleta, on the north-east coast of Gran Canaria, had been used by Phoenician and Roman ships as a safe anchorage; but it was not until 1478, the foundation year of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, that regular port activities were to be seen in this harbour.
As soon as Spain extended its rule over the Canary Islands, Las Palmas became the main support base for maritime expeditions across the oceans. The famous navigator, Christopher Columbus, used the islands as a base for shiprepairs and as his last stop in Europe before sailing to the New World. (more…)
