Last August, the Social Marine Institute awarded our shipyard in Pasaia the repair, maintenance and commissioning of the ship Juan de la Cosa.
This iconic hospital ship provides useful service to the Spanish fishing fleet, supplying health care “in situ” to anyone who requests it and is within the area it covers. In situations of high risk and severity, the vessel has the means to evacuate ill persons to land in the most suitable and quickest possible way. In addition to health activities, the vessel also provides emergency logistics support such as fishing net release service, dive service, electrical repairs etc.
With a length of 75 meters and a width of 14 meters, it has a dedicated area for castaways, common areas, service areas and cabins for ill persons. It has an operating room with videoconferencing equipment for medical use, should assistance be need in surgical operations. It also has an analytical laboratory, a treatment room and an isolated x-ray room. It also has a heliport, speedboats and a rescue boat.
During the month of October, all jobs to bring the vessel up to date were carried out during dry docking such as: boiler overhaul, preparation work, hull and deck blasting and painting, tank cleaning, pump-, davit-, propeller-, stabilizing fins repairs and maintenance and finally testing all equipment.
Having terminated these jobs, Zamakona Yards has fulfilled its commitment to the Spanish Government and the Social Marine Institute and the seafarers. The ship is now ready and in perfect condition to serve the fishing fleet in the North Atlantic during the bonito, the anchovies and the swordfish campaigns.
We would like to send our appreciation to these maritime professionals who do such a good job for our seafarers.

For the past months, among the relevant jobs performed at ZAMAKONA Yards in PASAJES, there are the docking of the tug JOAQUIM RUYRA and the general cargo vessel MUROS.
JOAQUIM RUYRA is 26 m long Aquamaster Tractor Tug and achieving a bollard pull of 46 t. The vessel belongs to REMOLQUES Y SERVICIOS MARITIMOS (REYSER), one of the major tug operators in Spain, and is based in the harbor of SANTANDER. The works performed included hull painted, tank disposal and washing, and the main engines general overhaul together with the azimuthal propellers from SCHOTTEL. Some minor jobs including box cooler cleaning, piping… were also included. This is the 5th vessel from REYSER to be docked this year in ZAMAKONA PASAIA. This confirms the confidence given in ZAMAKONA YARDS, but also it’s capability.
The vessel MUROS is a 90 x 14,40 m general cargo vessel belonging to NAVIERA MURUETA. MURUETA is a well established Client of ZAMAKONA Yards, and uses to dock whenever possible the vessels in PASAJES now for more than 5 years. In May in the port of BILBAO, the recently delivered RORO link span Nr 7, built by ZAMAKONA in 2012, suffered a damage while the ferry departed. The ferry slightly hit the pontoon and pushed the complete link spam back of a few cm. The foundations on shore were damaged, counter weight devices bent, and the electrical supply pulled away, so that the ramp could no longer be operated. Within 24 h ZAMAKONA mobilized 2 heavy lift cranes to lose the link spam from the pontoon and start a provisional repair. After 12 days work, the ramp came back into operation.

As marine resource development is moving further offshore and into deep sea regions, there is an increasing demand for multi-purpose offshore support vessels, capable of not only transporting cargo to and from offshore floating facilities, but also covering mooring, installation, and fire fighting operations in a wide variety of offshore environments.
All these matters require new generation offshore support vessels, generally more technically-advanced and with special features. OSV vessels are playing a vital role in different fields, including maintaining and supplying offshore oil and gas operations.

The 40 x 8 metres Grand Cayman flagged sailing yacht arrived to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a blown main engine. Zamakona Yards dismounted and diagnosed the engine. The owner decided to buy a new engine by a different brand and bring it by air. When it arrived, we demounted it to fit it into the engine room of the yacht. The most laborious jobs were the modifications of the bed frame, engine legs, pipes for the new engine, as well as to fabricate a frame for the new heat exchanger and the installment of a new water pump and piping. When everything was in place, we aligned the engine and the yacht returned to its home port, Palma de Mallorca.
Good trip.

The vessel belongs to Eckhoff GMB & CO and is currently docked at the Reina Sofía pier in the Port of Las Palmas. The project is being carried out in cooperation with Wartsila, one of the world leaders in marine engines.
The engine model is the Wartsila 8L46B with 8 cylinders in line, running vertically and producing 10,605 horse powers at 500 revolutions per minute. The crankshaft weighs 15,000 kg and measures 8 meters.
The work is highly complex, as the engine block, weighing 120.000 kg, is being lifted. Further, Napesca reinforced the deck to hang the weight of the engine in the roof of the engine room as well as opened a hole behind the engine to remove the old crankshaft and introduce the new one.
